Getting a playset onto our stone patio?

Anonymous
We have young kids and would love to create a good outdoor play space for them. Anytime we're at friends' houses, our kids are all over their swingsets and structures... Swings, slides, climbing towers. I want so badly to be able to give that to them at home, where I truly believe they would use it everyday.

The issue is that the entirety of our property behind our house is a bluestone patio. The usable area is about 10 ft deep and 30 ft wide.

The front of our house has grass, but there's only about 10 ft before it starts sloping considerably toward the road. That's also at the front of the house, which maybe seems weird for a playset? There is no usable space on either side of the house.

I would be so grateful for any ideas you have. Things you've done or seen, inspiring pictures. Companies who might be able to problem solve this with us. Insights into how to put a play structure on top of a stone patio, or if we'd need to rip the patio up (eek). Anything! Thank you in advance.

How old are your kids?

Kids get tired of the same playground equipment at their own house quickly. They like new equipment, not the same thing over and over.

Consider if your kids are like ours. Our kids are in school so we figure they get enough there M-F and when we they go to parks on weekends.

I would think a mulch bed could be put on top of the stone. Having a set at home was great for my kids. They came up with loads of ways to play on it.

I would forget the idea of a climing structure. How old are your kids?

Mine have a great time with a water table, sand box, (small) basketball hoop, and plenty of trucks, balls, plants etc to play with. I don't think you need something for them to climb to have fun.

Also rubberized mulch

Kids will play with anything at someone else’s house.

Just go to the park. Parks have better climbing stuff anyway.

I agree, I think some other outdoor stuff would make more sense. I don’t really think mulch on top of the pavers would be safe and everything else would be a huge hassle. I think invest some of that into other ideas that fit better with what you have instead. Like a mud kitchen type set up, balance bikes (with appropriate helmets). chalk, hoops, ropes, balls are played with on blacktops during recess at school. Little picnic table or something that they can sit at.

This. Your kids play on friend's play structures because they are novel. They come home and say "I wish WE had something like that" and you feel guilty you can't provide.

Meanwhile, their friends don't care about their play structure. They used it a bunch at first and now they only ever play on it when other kids come over and want to play on it.

You could get a wide variety of yard toys that are easy to store and will get more use. We have a bunch of gymnastics mats for tumbling and fort building, plus a tire swing. Kids love them, they cost a lot less than a big playlet, and we can store them away when not in use.

Dont bother. It will cost too much to make it safe and your kids will outgrow so fast.

My daughter loved her indoor avenlur large climbing structure. Maybe you can do that.
Or buy a bounce house with slide and water( we have one) and put it up when you can.

I would install the sandbox of their dreams with a cover.

Do you have a tree at all? You can build a tree house, swings/rings/trapeze bar from the branches, mount rock climbing studs into it.

Our tree is our jungle gym
