You aren’t “humbled.”

So many people brag on LinkedIn and other social media about receiving awards, and then say they are “Truly humbled.” No you aren’t. If you were you wouldn’t be broadcasting about yourself on social media. You are “honored.”

Just a vent because I’m home sick and cranky.

Get some chicken noodle soup and rest. Hope you feel better soon.

Ha! Yeah, I hate the "humbled" line. Just own the brag.

I feel the same about people using "blessed" in a similar way. You aren't "blessed" with a new home or awesome vacation.

Feel free not to like it, but they are saying they don't feel worthy of the prize/honor, whatever, and receiving it will make them strive to improve to be worthy of the honor. It's not the same thing as "I am humble."

You could say “proud” like being proud of being LGTBQIA+ or proud of being BIPOC.

On the other hand, pride is one of the seven deadly sins.

The linkedin bragging is funniest when you know it is likely an award that the person either nominated themselves for or brown-nosed someone else into nominating them for it (at least that's how a lot of it works in academia. sometimes we may have no nominations for an award unless people self-nominate). Clearly you are not 'humbled' to win the award if you nominated yourself for the award. presumably you nominating yourself (or got your colleague to nominate you) because on some level you feel like you deserve it. so just own it. False humility is strange.

Saying you're humbled is fine in many circumstances, but it can come across as entitled.

A friend of mine gave birth to premature multiples and two of the babies died the same week that Bobby Mccaughey gave birth to healthy septuplets. it was a bit hard to see all the stories in which she talked about God blessing her, and her little miracles the same week that my friend buried her children. Two equally faithful women, but I guess God just decided to double down on blessing the septuplet lady?

Dead babies are also a blessing, theologically speaking.

I agree, OP. Also I'm not sick but still very cranky, thank you for sharing your crankiness with me so that I am not alone in my crankiness!

This is so true. I used to have to pick people for department awards and they are meaningless, and we all knew it.

Also people in a field will pick each other over and over--seen this happen in a creative/academic field with awards that did mean something and had monetary compensation.
