I love how the sports forum really drives home the demographics of dcum

Jeff knows his audience very well!

Subforums for soccer, lax and swimming but not bball or football.

Though to be honest, I am surprised that there isn’t a basketball sub forum.

Are dcum parents not putting their kids in bball?

The universe of kids basketball is super chaotic and unorganized, so there's not as much to discuss.

"The youth soccer forum is so vicious they had to switch to using user names for a while" is how I explain this place to people who don't just say "oh, the racist website?" when I bring it up in real life.

Way back when, the sports forum had discussions about adults and their sports. Someone would post about good trails for runs and someone would post about their adult tennis league. Now it’s all kids all the time.

I would imagine because it’s so super chaotic and unorganized that it would be even more important for parents to share info

This. When my kid first started playing seriously, it was very confusing as I would have appreciated advice. I try to post when I see basketball questions for that reason.

My son and daughter play high school basketball and AAU (since 4th grade). I find only a couple of the DCUM posters to be helpful and our experience is so specific to the same AAU teams (not sneaker circuit) that I don't think I can generalize enough to comment. I try every now and then and someone always shoots down my answer, but my kids are very involved.

I’m always surprised there aren’t more baseball discussions, excluding the NWLL scandal, of course. There’s been more drama in our kids travel baseball teams than anything we’ve experienced in travel Soccer. So many parents thinking their kids are going to be the next Bryce harper or Trea Turner at 10yo. Team bouncing, and losing friends all for what.

Are local parents really that dumb?

DMV isn’t a youth baseball hotbed

It’s very rare for kids in this area to blow up in baseball

Much more common in šŸ€

We definitely could use a basketball forum. But parents tend to not be forthcoming with their basketball information. I think it is because there aren’t many teams and the competition is tough.

The DMV puts out a lot of good ball players. Two first round picks from northern Virginia this summer, several highly ranked teams churning out D1 picks players

DMV also has produced several of the top Track & Field athletes in recent history:
1. Noah Lyles
2. Josephus Lyles
3. Grant Holloway
4. Sean McGorty

All (except Josephus?) Olympians. I’m sure there are more.

The way he end up making the sub categories is that people complain that those sports are "hogging" all the posts in the main category, so he makes a sub group. It necessarily reflects the demographics. It's not a coincidence.

Not much juice discussing or gossiping about youth basketball. Either your kid is good enough or not, rosters are small and teams are so plentiful that rosters are always turning over and in flux, and teams come and go every season. What’s true today may be wrong or irrelevant tomorrow. The levels of basketball are also so steeply different that players of different levels never overlap or come in contact with each other. So basketball comments are often niche specific and often not generally applicable.

Lacrosse, in contrast, is a sport where most players all know each other or know of each other (top players and non top players), families often know each other, and there are a small number of clubs and teams in the area that are relatively stable from year to year. That makes it great for gossip, and most topics discussed are widely relevant or relatable.

Selfishly, would really like to see subcategories for baseball and hockey as those are DS’s two sports. We are at an age when we will need to pick one sport to focus on and it’s been very difficult to get a good read on the options—eg the clubs as a whole and specific coaches—as we consider switching organizations.
