Fresh apples

Any recommendations about where to get new season apples that aren't the size of soccer balls or that cost twice as much as the supermarket? I'm looking not too far outside the beltway.

If anyone has seen stayman-winesaps close in, please tell me where! Not crazy huge and deliciously juicy – they’re my favorite apple.

This isn’t a great region for apples.

The Adams Morgan farmers market is having their annual apple tasting on Saturday morning! I think there's also an apple pie contest.

They almost always have Stayman and lots of heirloom varieties. The prices are best if you buy a half bushel. They keep well in the fridge. So much better than the grocery store!

It actually is a great area for apples, but you should try a farm market instead of a grocery store to see what is local.

I went to a farmers market this morning and the vendor was asking over $4 a pound for some apples. Went and bought some pink ladies at Lidl instead

What is it with the super huge apples? Some are the size of grapefruits. How does this happen?

PA is fantastic orchard country and the farmers markets all around DC and Baltimore are packed with apple vendors. Mine in Baltimore typically offers as many as 20 different apple varieties from his orchards in PA.

Tangent -- There is a fantastic study of the domestication of the apple in "The Botany of Desire" by Michael Pollan. It addresses a lot of the things folks are talking about here -- like why some apples are huge and others aren't, why some regions have lots of orchards, how the different varieties taste different, etc.

Twin Springs usually has a nice variety at farmers markets. Here’s a link to their list. They’ll be at the Dupont Circle market on Sundays, as well as multiple markets throughout the week.

Wegmans sells a nice selection of apples, including from local sources. I like Envy, Opal and Sweetango.

The bags of honeycrisp apples from Harris Teeter are small -- the Amazon bags are good too.
