Math kangaroo question

Can we participate in the Math Kangaroo test without belonging to a center? How does one go about it? 2nd grade and in fair lakes if that matters.

But there is so much free math content, that doing a paid one for common math challenges seems pointless.

Are there some you could recommend? We know about BA but if you have others, please do share.

Every Math Competition my child has participated in has had a fee associated with it. It is not that much but there is a fee.

Most of these have free old contests.

The "contest" isn't the important part. The practice is.

No one cares what score your kid got on an elementar school math contest. If the kid does well or improves over time, they are well prepared for future.

There is a cost for RSM/IMC. We have participated the last few years and paid a small fee. Maybe it was for the second stage, you have to score high enough to be invited to participate. That text is a longer period of time at a physical location.

Yes, there are free old exams your kid can do but those are not competitions then, they are practice exams.

Competitions are based on testing yourself against others. They require a fee. It is not a large fee but it is still there.

That all depends on the kid. Some kids are motivated by competition and by the chance of winning. There's nothing wrong with that.

Its waste of time - have no value in TJ/College admission

It is a way to encourage kids to have fun with math and think about it a bit differently. Not everything is about TJ or college applications. DS’s rec soccer isn’t going to help him get into TJ or college either.

Elementary math contests (and camps like epsilon camp) are a great place to connect with like-minded kids and their parents. This can be a really big deal for gifted kids, who often struggle to find peers among their agemates

Never heard anyone is taking these type of exams for fun including soccer. Objective is always to come on top for that added advantage!
