Vocational education if your kid won't earn a diploma?

Anonymous
We're in MoCo and I'm trying to see what MCPS offers in terms of vocational education. It seems like there is no good site to figure this out and you have to click through every single high school to get a sense of what is available, and even then it is still not easy. I've heard through the SN grapevine that sometimes higher functioning kids do some kind of workforce training half of the day and regular school the other half. Anybody have experience with this?

If your child is in 10th grade they can enter the lottery for Edison HS of Technology. https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/edison/

It’s been awhile since I checked but Thomas Edison used to do a million open houses a year for prospective students. It’s pretty competitive to get in so if you’re child is applying don’t miss any deadlines.

Thing is though your child might have to be on the diploma track in order to be eligible. If that’s not the case, you should get connected to the post HS services people.

How old is your kid and what program are they in? (You'll get more relevant information that way)

This is a conversation for the counselor or transition teacher. A separate phone call or during an IEP meeting.

Go to the MCPS website and put Career Readiness into the search for a comprehensive list of programs. But PP is right that you need to contact your team to find out what your child is eligible for.
