Just had my first egg retrieval and I am disappointed

Anonymous
I am 36 years old. AMH 3.37. 32+ follicles counted at my last appointment so color be shocked and disappointed to only have 7 retrieved!

I understand not all follicles contain eggs but such a drastic drop-off?

I am so sad!

That is disappointing. I have a .39 AMH and got six eggs out of my retrieval. This definitely sucks.

It’s the dirty secret of IVF—it’s not guaranteed.

I’m so sorry that this happened! Has your clinic offered any explanation? Were there many immature eggs? An issue with the timing of the trigger?

Something doesn’t feel right about this.

Well, just know that my cousin’s best cycle was one where they collected 8 eggs. She has 2 babies from that collection!

I hope good things for you!

My fraternal twins were conceived from a cycle where they retrieved 8 eggs. It’s about quality, not quantity. Good luck!

Listen to “Race to 35” podcast which is on the Armchair Expert podcast feed. Interesting, both hosts went through the process with very differing results. They offer a few hypotheses on why.

They use protocols for everyone your first round and, get shitty results. I had 29, 13 mature, 1 normal. They stimmed me too fast for PCOS (ducking shocker). Now they day this next cycle I'll get more.

That said, my issue is miscarrying genetically normal babies.

I only had one retrieval and got only 3 eggs. Mom now to identical twins. As PP said it’s about quality not quantity. Wishing you luck!

It only takes one. Lots to be thankful for. I got three eggs. Two kids sleeping the rooms down the hall. Don’t give up!

Don't worry too much. It's quality not quantity. But also your first cycle tends to be a combo of trying the most successful standard protocol that your test results indicate would work for you. Based on how this cycle goes your RE can tweak dosage, timing of retrieval, etc.

All of this. I distinctly remember our RE telling us that they learn a lot from the first cycle.
I’m sorry, OP. I know it is disappointing. Hopefully your RE has plans in place to tweak protocols if necessary.

This is OP. We received an update today that all 7 eggs are mature and fertilized successfully!

Congrats, OP! Will you be sending them in for PGT testing? If so, please update us!
