Clarifying the thread title and the tweets...shots were fired on 5th Street between Underwood and Van Buren, outside the school, but no victims. The look-out-for is a juvenile, but no immediate connection to the schools.
Grateful to the Wells leadership for letting us know they were safe but in lockdown. (Coolidge, Wells, Whittier, Capital City, and Paul were all in lockdown.) |

From councilmember’s office
Neighbors, a quick update on this alarming situation: MPD has completed its search of the immediate area and the school lockdowns have been lifted. The incident is being actively investigated, but the initial reports we have indicate that the suspect fired shots in the air in a nearby alley and fled. Thankfully there is still no indication of anyone being hurt or any property damage. If anyone has any information related to the incident they should share it with law enforcement by calling 202-727-9099 or texting 50411. Thank you to MPD and our school staff for their quick response to ensure safety. I will circle back with more information if there are other updates to share. |
Thanks for sharing. I assumed so which is why I said "at or near". The first tweet mentioned student but know early reports are always shaky. |
Happy to help! And as soon as that lockdown was lifted, I got a text alert for an armed robbery next to Friendship Ideal...on my daily dog walk route and close to Sela and Roots...I'm so tired of this. |
That's my daily walk route too. The drug corner has been cleaned up for quite a while, so this is discouraging. |
I’m getting tired of this sh** too. |
These happened a couple of times last year too. I cannot imagine getting messages that my kid’s school in on lockdown. I am glad they were safe. |
I have a child at one of those schools and it has happened way too often ( I think three times since last spring). I’m really tired of it. My DH has wanted to move for awhile, I was the holdout. I am really leaning towards it’s time to go. |
Where are you going to go, though? Unless you're leaving the United States, it seems like school lockdowns have become par for the course basically everywhere. My kids were in one of the schools that locked down yesterday (although they don't seem to have known about it, I think b/c it ended before they went out for recess so their day was normal) and I mentioned it on my text thread with friends from college, and 2 other people in other parts of the country (WI and TX) had also had lockdowns in their kids' schools in the last 2 days.

I guess I don’t mind a lockdown it’s the frequency of lockdowns that has me concerned. The general neighborhood has had several acts of violence including two people shot and killed in very close vicinity of where we live in the past few years. I have family members in other areas of the country and this doesn’t happen nearly as frequently. |
