I am moving to the area for a job at UMD next August and looking for a trusted childcare center for my 8 month old. We are on the waitlist for the Bright Horizons at UMD, but I'd like some additional recommendations. We are considering living near metro lines in Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Greenbelt or Hyattsville and welcome recommendations for centers in those areas. I know it is a forum about preschool and daycare, but I also welcome thoughts about which areas would be best in the longer term for a young black couple (African American and South African) who strongly value education, arts and culture (esp. jazz, indy film, poetry), and outdoors (hiking and kayaking). |
I think any of those neighborhoods will be good bets - Greenbelt is the only one though without a downtown area and is probably more car-centric owing to its location next to the BW Parkway. If you are open to it, there are quite a few in-home and faith-based daycares in the Greenbelt and Hyattsville. |
Once you have a list of child care centers, I recommend looking up their inspection reports here: https://www.checkccmd.org/
When we were doing our search, I eliminated a center that had a violation for an infant being in an unsafe sleep situation. |
Stay in Silver Spring! We have jazz and blues festival every year! We love it here! It's diverse, fun and the purple line new train outside will be here |
Find a nice daycare, there are a few in Silver Spring |
Pre k is not a requirement for kindergarten |
Use Maryland LOCATE to find licensed Family Child cares, centers |
+1 this is an awesome and highly underrated resource. |
If you are ok with immersion we love Estrellitas Montessori School in Takoma Park Maryland |
St. Jerome’s in Hyattsville had a daycare when I lived there. They have a nice Montessori program at the parish school next door (ages 3-6). I think that parishioners fill all the Montessori spots, but some non-Catholic community members were able to get infant care. My friend was happy with the day care. |
19:06 again, I just looked and the St. J’s childcare center is open https://stjeromes.org/about-us
I enjoyed living in the Hyattsville historic district. Prices have gone up, but it’s a good neighborhood. |
Thank you so much! |
