Will have some foodie friends in town soon and together our kids range from 8-13. Their younger kids are actually the biggest foodies in the family and want to go to a Jose Andres restaurant after seeing him on some TV show. Are any of the restaurants more accepting of kids than others?
I'll admit my last experience was getting turned away at Jaleo when my kids were 5-7ish, and I haven't been back since with the family, so I don't know if that was a one off experience with a grumpy hostess or typical. She was about to seat us but then my partner came around the corner and she saw that our party had kids and basically backtracked and said they didn't have a table that could seat kids. |
Zaytinya or Jaleo both seem good for adventurous eater kids.
Zaytina definitely.
Oyamel used to serve grasshoppers.

We’ve always had the opposite experience at Jaleo, sounds like you had a poorly trained hostess last time. We moved away from DC 15 years ago but when we were back to visit right before Covid, we took our kids there and they loved it. I know in interviews José Andreas has always said that children are welcome.

I've taken my kids (who are all 6 and under) to Jaleo a ton of times with no problem. There are always families there. You had a terrible hostess. Any of them will be fine.
Op here. Glad to hear that it was perhaps a one-off and I can go back to what used to be one of my favorites. I'll have the guests look at the menus and try to pick an early time on a weeknight.
Agreed that there are usually a ton of kids at Jaleo. I work across the street and walk by every evening and it's packed with families. Zaytinya is cool too, though.
I would not hesitate to take kids to any of the Andres group restaurants. I mean, if you were running toddler happy hour with 10 kids under 2, I might stop and think, but for your age range, you should be fine.
“Foodie tweens”? Cringey.
Oyamel or Jaleo - just make a reservation and then they can't turn you aways and go earlier than the typical dinner crowd.

Came here to say this one, I think it gets lost in the shuffle of the others and it's a gem |
