New Mexico bike lane - will cyclists use it?

Anonymous
Driving north on New Mexico this evening. Cyclist heading uphill in the center of the lane, going roughly 2 mph. To my left (on the other side of the southbound lane) there is a brand new bike lane intended for both ways, completely unused. Why spend millions on these lanes, displacing parking and closing driving lanes for something the people it was made for refuse to use it?

Yes, people are using the New Mexico bike lanes, on bikes. Here's an idea: why don't you give them a try?

I honestly cannot understand why there are a few posters on this forum whose entire life seems to revolve around an obsession with other people's transportation by bike. It seems like a terrible hobby. Why don't they try something else, like building ships in bottles, or collecting Depression glass, or memorizing Beowulf in the original?

Just because there’s a separate bike lane on the road I’m using does NOT mean I’m required to use it. I can use any lane I want, because I’m entitled to by law. Don’t like it? Too bad. Maybe I’ll make it a point to ride in the lane next to the bike lane when I find myself in such places, just because I now know it pisses you off so much.

Is the New Mexico bike lane some sort of experiment? How did that tiny block get chosen? All the AU students riding their bikes to their million dollar homes?

And when you inevitably get hit, at least you'll have your point. The problem with DC cyclists is that none of them seem happy. They all seem to be rage monsters. You'd think having that sort of healthy hobby that keeps you fit would make you happier.

Same reason I idle my car in bike lanes.

I'll run my bike right into you and dent your bumper.

Okay. Thanks for confirming that there’s no reason for bike lanes.

+1 DC better track usage. If they aren't used, dismantle.

Thanks for confirming drivers' nativist bloodlust. "You'll die, so get out of my way."

Sigh. You're clearly an aggressive, angry cyclist who defiantly challenges drivers and wants everyone to know he owns the road, he has the law on his side, he can do whatever the hell he wants. We get it, dude. That's why you'll end up hit, not because the typical driver intends to hit you.

Most bikers in DC are morons who do not follow the laws. They are entitled, usually old white guys, who act like they are on top of the world.

Why we cater to them, the world will never know.

I secretly hope a biker hits me so I can launch their precious bike into traffic.

If bikers don’t follow the rules of the road, or keep up with traffic, they should not be riding a bike. I’m sick of being stuck behind some biker going 12mph on Mass Ave.

If you are out of shape and can’t handle it, take a bus.

I break the taillights of cars that do this with my bike lock.
