Countywide &Regional IBs- how do they decide who to admit?

Anonymous
New to the magnet programs in MCPS. We are looking at RMIB and Springbrook IB. At the RM info session they stressed that only 125 students out of 1,000 are accepted. How do they decide who gets in?

I am guessing the regional program is less selective. But again what weighs the most heavily? Grades? MAP scores? Essays? Mix of home school?

RMIB will be very hard to get into. It’s very competitive since it’s the magnet, countywide IB program.

Kennedy and Springbrook will be easier to get into but I think grades and teacher recommendations matter most.

The application does not have teacher recommendations?

On the letter we received for my son, they said he had been nominated to participate in the IB program based on his high grades and teacher recommendations. But, that was a nomination for him from his home school and he was a sophomore. He didn’t apply outside of the school or as a freshman.

"Less selective" is the wrong way to think about it. Less competitive because there is a smaller pool of students due to a more limited region is more accurate.

The selection committee gets de-indentified data - primarily test scores and grades. They also get whatever mini-essay that the application includes nowadays. They don't see things like names, race, gender, address or middle school. There aren't any teacher recs. I'm not sure if they have any other qualitative data.

So do you think they have grade and score cut offs and pick from there randomly? Or is just straight up best scores and grades?

Not random. Scores, grades, and essays.

The regional programs are significantly less selective because they get fewer applicationns

Correct. Like I said, they approached my kid in 10th grade as a sophomore based on his grades and apparently some of his teachers recommending him to the school's IB coordinator for consideration.

I think the MS grades are very diluted, pretty much everyone who tries gets an A. Only score I would trust is the MAP score

Except when they are high school classes in middle school. Like languages and algebra and geometry
