Is Howard moving in the same direction as MCPS

Anonymous
Does Howard have 50% rules and consistent attendance issues? Do they solve problems with Restorative Justice and no actual consequences?

Trying to decide if things are better in Howard or trending downward like MCPS. Thanks

Your post is so loaded with conservative buzzing that I can easily say Howard County is not the right county for you. Consider Carroll County instead. It's the right shade of red for your concerns.

HCPSS isn't nearly as experimental as MCPS, but it definitely leans blue.

HCPSS doesn't really have the same kind of poor, underperforming schools, so it doesn't resort to the policies MCPS uses to prop up its weakest schools.

One of the reasons HoCo has fewer poor, underperforming schools is that they more aggressively rebalance school boundaries so there is less SES segregation. MCPS would never attempt some of the boundary redraws HoCo engaged in because parents with kids at W schools wouldn't stand for it.

I think the HoCo way is better.

Hoco parents with kids at the top schools weren’t too happy about it either!! I guess you don’t live here.

The median household income in HoCo is quite a bit higher than MoCo. That’s largely the reason why there are fewer low performing schools. Way higher FARMs percentage in MoCo.

But yes, HoCo redistricts quite a bit more frequently than MoCo.

Leave Maryland. Maryland is great but the schools are bonkers.

Where are you going to go? FCPS is also into equity and restorative justice. Of the three, I think HCPSS experiments the least. You mean leave the DMV entirely? Well, go ahead.

Will HCPSS be at the same place as MCPS in 10 years? Are RJ and 50% rules going to eventually spread everywhere?

Do any school systems in the DMV have cell phone bans in the high schools?

the 50% rule is not just in MCPS or the DMV.

But yet MCPS high schools are consistently the top in the state.

Individually for a handful of schools. This only helps if you live in one of the wealthier areas and your kids are zoned for the 5-6 top schools. If you are in the rest of the 90% of the school district, you have a much weaker school system than HCPSS. The school system in HCPSS is consistently stronger across the board. In general the majority of HCPSS ranks significantly better than the all but those top few schools.

MCPS is one system. The 5 to 6 schools you talk about are a part of the same system as the rest. Same curriculum, same programs.

dp.. as a PP noted, HCPSS has less lower income kids than MCPS. That's why you think it's "consistently stronger across the board". That may be a correct assessment but it's not a fair comparison.

Now, if you compare like for like, most of the Top HS in MD are in MoCo.
