We're emerging from the fog of the first year and I'm finding myself a tad overwhelmed by the prospect of parenting a toddler. I'd appreciate some well-reasoned perspective and tips on handling the challenges we'll be facing over the next several years. What book helped you the most?
Thanks! |
I got the Happiest Toddler on the Block. The insights are good and some of the advice as well. I don't know if it's the BEST book on toddlers since it's the only one I've read but I have used some of the tips offered (like reflecting back your child's emotions with simple words when they are whining/tantrumming). |
Lord of the Flies, by William Golding
(More seriously, I really find those Touchpoints books by Brazelton to be good. I also turned often to the American Academy of Pediatrics books for nuts-and-bolts issues.) Good luck. |
Lord of the Flies--too funny! And also one of those cases where you say you're joking but not really? Oh dear. |
Wait! You didn't even say you were joking! Shit, I have got to get my game together. |
Toddler 411. Short and to the point. |
I like this whole series, even though some of the details are a bit dated (references to smoking, gender roles etc.) Over the years, I've found they really get it right about children's development and behavior.
Your One Year Old: The Fun-Loving, Fussy 12-24 month old (http://www.amazon.com/Your-One-Year-Old-Fun-Loving-12-24-Month-Old/dp/0440506727/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1279549515&sr=8-1 ) I also liked Happiest Toddler on the Block. Not so much because I used all the techniques, but because it helped me understand and empathize with what DD was going through. And How to Behave So Your Preschooler Will, Too is a great one for ages 2-5. http://www.amazon.com/How-Behave-Your-Preschooler-Will/dp/0142004588/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1279549633&sr=1-1 Good luck! ![]() |
