My son is doing ok in these classes but I know a tutor once in a while could help.
Specifically, I'd like some tips early on in writing the essays for AP world and AP Language. His teachers give him Ok scores but not great and he said they aren't really telling him how to do better. Ap Env Science is not too tough my son said but the exams seem a lot trickier than expected. He's got high B's in all three but is used to getting straight As. Anyone have tutors who can help him a little? Certainly not once a week for each class. I've tried Varsity tutors who have tutors for everything and it was a bit of a scam. They never had a tutor when you needed one and many of them were barely qualified. I'm a bit hesitant to try another big service who claim to handle any subject. I'd rather connect with individual tutors or even a group class though fitting that into my son's schedule might be a challenge. Thank you for any guidance here. I have a call with a tutor for AP World History but it's $3800 for the year and it's 2 group classes a week and one on one tutoring is additional. Seems like too much time and money for just one class! |
| I wonder if he mainly needs a writing or study skills tutor? Maybe start with someone for AP World and Lang that teaches the format and provides feedback on his writing? |
| I would check wyzant out. I have found good tutors there. |
| You don't need overly specific tutors. Anyone qualified to teach high school writing is fine. |
We just went through the tutor search with Wyzant and tried 5 tutors for an AP level class similar to what OP is looking for. One just couldn't explain anything. DC thought he was really nice but was even more lost after the session and annoyed at wasting time. Another guy, again very nice and smart, kept having to look stuff up and in the end wasn't able to help with the thing that was difficult for DC. Two were pretty decent explainers at things that were part of the core curriculum but if you veered off even a little it became less useful. The last tutor was terrific but also incredibly expensive and very difficult to schedule with. If you do try Wyzant be prepared for some trial and error and investing money to find a good tutor. |
That’s too bad to hear. I have only used their tutors for math and physics and found them great. Did you submit reviews? That is what I like best about the service - the ability to read the reviews. |
| Princeton Review = they have a range of tutoring services, look them up. |

+1, great tutors. More $ than Wyzant or Varsity. |
| Trying Preply right now (was recommended by someone on DCUM). |
