Injuries

If you have a high school kids or older, what has been your experience with soccer (boys) injuries when they were younger? I have a U11 player and so far have seen three kids get injured since late August.

What type of injuries? Are the injuries coming from games or practices?

Our experience is with injuries for high school boys who were playing on both HS teams and travel teams, and an increased level of play intensity. No concussions but things like hip problems, shin splints etc. Mainly overuse issues. Nothing major like broken bones.

Knowing more about what you are seeing - it would be easier to determine if is it fitness. training? coaching? game day reffing?

PP Here: when our player was younger - we didn't see many injuries but mainly problems with Sever's disease or growth plate issues in knees etc.

two high school players. No major injuries ever. You shouldn't expect it. Learn to manage their time and you should be fine.

Concussions are awful. Saw one concession U15 that derailed a girl's entire school year

HS player: Very few injuries in HS - his coaches say it's starting the season and maintaining fitness throughout, team depth, load monitoring, and having a trainer to help. During his younger years - there wasn't the same focus on fitness and certainly no trainers but we saw very few injuries, mainly the injuries occurred somewhere else and impacted the play but didn't happen in practice or on the field.

Just my 2 cents, but make sure your kid spends some time working on deceleration, change of direction, running form and general footwork. 10-15 mins every couple of days can go a long way. There are a lot of kids out there who look like they are on skates. Spending some time on those will help avoid some potential collisions and hopefully adds a measure of prevention for joint injuries.
