Dr. Sacks and metformin?

Anonymous
I have an appointment with Dr. Sacks this week and I'm curious if he is open to prescribing metformin? I've already done 3 cycles of clomid with no success and think metformin might be a good next step.

FWIW, I took metformin and that alone got my cycle back on track and helped me lose 10 pounds so I'm definitely a believer. It's worth asking Dr. Sacks, I know Dr. Gordon prescribes it for his PCOS patients.

Yes. He started me on it first and it worked like a charm. Dr. Sacks is wonderful. Good luck.

He prescribed it for me, as well. Agreed that Dr. Sacks is wonderful.

I've long suspected that I have PCOS and Dr. Sacks did not mention it to me. Could I ask what symptoms/labs you had that seemed to indicate it should be used?

he'll put you on metformin if you have pcos. probably not if there's no idication that is what is causeing the infertility. that's what he did for me and it worked.

Metformin works really well for treating PCOS. However, it can be a little harsh on your stomach at first. If you ask to be put on it, ask for the Extended Release version. It is so much easier on your stomach. I started on the regular Metformin and had a really hard time. Once my RE switched me to the ER version, it works like a charm and no stomach upset. My cycles have been more regular and I have even lost 16 pounds. It also helps with Metformin and PCOS if you keep a low carb diet like Phase Two of the South Beach Diet. Good luck!

OP here. I met with him today and he didn't mention metformin, only clomid. I asked about metformin and he told me he doesn't prescribe it any more unless something indicates you are hypo glycemic or diabetic. He said there was a trial done on metformin vs. clomid and clomid had much better results than metformin. He said 3 years ago he used it all the time but not now. So it's back to clomid for me, hopefully with better success.
