Blood pressure meds and losing weight

Anonymous
I am currently on BP meds and recently lost 25 lbs. I still have 55 lbs to go, but I am curious, how will I know when/if I can come off or my BP meds? Will my BP become extremely low while taking the meds, triggering a need to come off of it? If anyone has experiences, I’d love to hear.

I lost 40 pounds and am still on the pills. Now at 140. If it's genetic (mine was) weight probably doesn't matter.

OP here. Thanks. Forgot I posted this. I have noticed that mine is coming down. For example, initially it was 120/80 on meds. Now, I’m tracking 110/70. I am interested in hearing feedback from those who have had this experience. I never had HBP until I had my last child and was my heaviest ever.

My mother is the same. Changed diet, lost a lot of weight and still needed BP medication.

It's individual, OP. Talk with your doctor.

Great work on the weight loss.

Some first-line BP meds have protective benefits, so your doctor could conclude you should stay on them if you responded well to the med and are borderline without.

Just keep checking your blood pressure to see if it's going down.

Also if it's a beta blocker they are hard to come off of because of rebound aniexty and feeling like your hearts beating too fast.

I’m down about 100 pounds. I was on a low dose beta blocker. I had to come off because I endurance sported my way to a low resting heart rate with the beta blocker that was too low. Resting heart rate is now around what it was on the medication. Cardio endurance is through the roof-though I spend a lot of time on it. You’d never know my past history if you met me now. Other than diet overall, I don’t drink often at all any more.

YMMV

Just keeping checking your blood pressure. It might go way down, and you will need to come of the meds. It might not. Be aware that if you start to get dizzy, especially when you suddenly stand up from a seated position, your bp may be too low. But chances are, you are going to need the meds even with the weight loss.
