Gray blending on dark hair.

Anonymous
Decided to go gray earlier this year. My hair is dark and the grays looks awful. Please tell me more about gray blending on dark hair. Do they just give you highlights of gray or do they have to color your hair first and then highlights on top? I've only done diy hair color.

Ohhh. Is this a thing? I have some friends whose gray looks great and I've assumed they weren't dying, but maybe....

Same here.

I started to DIY my roots by adding some Light Auburn 5RG to my light brown 5N hair color. And then I went to a stylist to get reddish/blonde highlights. When my gray roots start to come in, I apply a reddish brown powder powder with a small brush to the gray roots area. I color my roots about every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on how long I can take looking at the gray.

The root cover powder is like an eye shadow. I just apply it when I apply my make up.

I was going to write, that there really isn't any way to blend gray hairs with dark hairs.

Highlights don't really work to hide grays on dark hair. You just end up with a third color in your hair, and the grays still show. I have had really good luck just using a demi-permanent color, 3 shades lighter than my base. I'm ~level 2-3, so I use either a level 5 or 6 demi. Demi-permanent doesn't mean it doesn't last. It just means that the developer is a weaker strength. It is strong enough to get the color to deposit, but not strong enough to "lift" or lighten your base color, which is what permanent hair dye does. The advantage of demi-permanent is that it is gentler, and you don't get the brassy undertones that happen with brown permanent hair dye as it fades. It's super easy and cheap.

I have dark brown, almost black hair. I’m gray at my temples and a little bit throughout. I get lighter brown highlights and I do not cover my grays. The grays look less “stark” but they are definitely still visible. the highlights bring some balance to warm everything up.

From a maintenance and aesthetic standpoint this is preferable to me than coloring my own hair.

PP, please recommend a brand of demi permanent dye.

I buy Wella Colour Touch off amazon. You will also need a 6 volume developer (Wella has one of these) to use with it.

Np: I’ve been using the wella for years. It works very well when you just have a tiny amount of gray and want it to look a little less gray. It has started looking terrible now that I have more—the “extra” lighter color on my gray is too visible and looks weird.
