Stoddert

Stoddert parents, I’d love to know what your impressions have been. Are you happy? Thoughts on teacher quality and communication from the school?

We are relocating to Glover Park with our 3 year old. I’m a product of public schools; DH is not. We’re weighing the public vs. private options.

It has the feel of a suburbian school though it's predominantly a neighborhood school with few out of boundary students. Teachers have been fine so far.

If you are IB for Stoddert save your money in elementary and send your kid there. Switch to private in upper elementary if you want.

Also are you a product of urban public schools? Because those can be quite different from some suburban public schools. My parents paid 25K in property taxes a year to send me to public school in a very rich suburb. It was basically private school.

Parent & Realtor living in GP here.

We've been very happy. One kid who just finished and is in middle and the other is still at Stoddert. Some problems with behavioral issues that weren't addressed, but the Principal whose tenure that happened on left and we're in better hands now.

I think it starts strong but it can get a little dicier in the upper grades. By 5th grade my older kid had NO HOMEWORK ever, which wasn't a great preparation tactic for middle school. They also love their PARCC tests, but I think that's finally being bagged this year. I didn't like though that they prepped them for several weeks for PARCC tests in mid-spring, then there was no homework after that. It felt like most of 5th grade was a waste.

Just want to chime in that PARC was bagged… and replaced with another standardized test. So it will likely be the same story.

You mean PARCC. No, it wasn't "bagged" (whatever that means). It was just rebranded "DC CAPE."

GP Parent / Realtor again you're replying to. Yes! I heard! Our teacher conference on Thursday, the teacher made it clear that PARCC is dunzo and made the comment that "DC is the last place to get rid of PARCC."

NP and it’s not gone just name change. DCPS loves a good PR spin and wastes so much money on crap like that. It’s the same test.

love it here. many of our neighbors have done K-12 in DCPS. Can't speak for upper grades, but the lower grades seem identical to my friend's experiences in Bethesda (close friends have their kids at Westbrook).

Good PTA, decent communication. Best part is most kids (other than the few out of boundary students) walk to school. So in some sense it is the best of both worlds and a throwback to a day before parents all drove their kids to school like in many of the suburbs/privates.

I'd suggest Sidwell of Beauvoir. Anywhere else is second or third tier.

*I'd also add GDS to that list.

Have you toured? I recommend you do so. It's so hard to judge without being inside, looking for yourself, asking the questions that are important to you and hearing how they respond.
