Not looking for anyone to tell me there are better non-HBCUs for computer science. DD wants an HBCU. Will not go to FL so no FAMU. Howard and NCAT are on the table but DD's top 2 are Hampton and Spelman. Which school would be better for computer science?
I understand they're very different and it's all about fit, but I'm strictly asking about the program and post graduate opportunities. Happy to hear from people in the industry too. We know 1 graduate each from both. Those young ladies are recent-ish grads and are doing well. 2020 grad and 2021 grad. The Spelman CS grad had offers from FB, MS, and Accenture. She did not do Spelman/GA Tech 3-2 program. She graduated straight from Spelman. The Hampton CS grad had offers from Amazon, MS, and CapitalOne. They also had offers from good but lesser-known companies. The Hampton grad also studied abroad. I'm not sure my DD cares about that. Would love any feedback. Thank you! |
I don't have any experience with Hampton or Spelman. I'd direct her towards NCA&T. |
I have never heard of or seen any black female SWE. I guess they exist IRL. |
I fear that you won’t get much good information here. I suggest College Confidential. There are a few active HBCU parents. |
I’m not ashamed to say that I make these kinds of decisions based on prestige … Spelman is a bigger name than Hampton, so that’s what I would advise. I think being in a major city and having the connection to Georgia Tech is also a big factor. The 3/2 program with GT seems like an amazing way to both get the HBCU experience and the big public research university experience.
What does she think about the single-sex aspect? On the one hand that might make Spelman even better since she won’t have to worry about gender discrimination. On the other hand, I wonder if Hampton devotes more resources to CS because it is more traditionally male … |
For what it is worth the Office of the National Cyber Director is led by a Hampton graduate. Female. |
NP, and this is what I was going to say. Atlanta sucks, though. |
Since you haven't personally seen it then of course it must not exist. OP - I think both are good options. I would talk to each school about what companies come to campus for career fairs. My daughter is a computer science major at Howard. She graduares this spring and already has 2 excellent job offers lined up. |
How did she like Howard? DD worries it's too close. We're in Arlington. Would you mind sharing what offers she got and how? (Interned there, career fair, cold call, knew someone). |
Following: Thanks for this question PP. DS also looking at Howard vs. NC A&T for CS. Info on CS career prospects out of Howard would be good to know. |
She LOVES Howard but her dad and I are also Bisons so it's in her bones. Her current offers are Intel and Oracle. She is waiting to hear from HP . She interned at Intel for 2 summers. I am not sure how Oracle or HP came to be. I can ask her if she saw any other HBCU grads when she was at Intel and where they went to school. |
They are both fine. CS is the easiest subject to teach and learn. Half the Internet is free educational support content for CS. |
They are both very good schools so she should go to the one she wants. Most of those companies yo listed will hire from any school and they are looking for minorities and women so that will give her a better leg up than the school name. Where does she want to go? That's where I would pick (baring money). |
I'd shoot for Georgia Tech or Virginia Tech if she is looking in those two states. |
OP said she wants an an HBCU. Doesn't seem the state matters but the student is not interested in PWIs. |
