How do you decide on a contractor to remodel your home?

Reddit says to interview a lot of builders but I already have my neighbor whose a builder in mind or another one who is great and did a good job on my bathroom for a great price. I'm not sure if I actually need an architect but was suggested I needed a designer for some rooms

We interviewed a few contractors. Some friends around the corner renovated their home (well, it was a teardown and replacement). They were very happy with the work so we used the same contractor to add our second floor.

DP - can you recommend the company that added your second floor? We’re considering adding a second floor and are just starting the process.

Used the guy who did work for the next door neighbors.

I met him while he was working on her house.

Even if you know, or think you know, the companies you're considering, get them to come over and talk to you about your project and then bid. See if they are responsive to your ideas and what kinds of suggestions they have. The process of having pros come to your home and look at the situation and talk through what's possible can be very educational and will help you be an informed reader of however many bids you get.

When bids come in, how specific are they? Are they upselling you or looking for ways for you to save money? When could they start? What is their process? Who precisely will be working on your project?

The more detailed their evaluation of your project, the better. Beware of hand-waving.
