Landon Upper School

What's the culture like at Landon for high school?
Friendly? Douchey and entitled? A mix of both?

There will always be few good eggs in each class, but overall Landon (no matter how hard administration has tried to change it) is majority "douchey and entitled". Every year there is always some example, and often more than one, of poorly behaved boys and parents.

Friendly and entitled, with a few douchbags

This is gross. How about not calling kids “douchebags”? Grow up.

As a current Landon US parent the think that I have found the most impressive is that the boys are generally not huge partiers and they do not vape etc. My son plays a club sport and many of his teammates on that team do engage in these activities. My son is sort of middle of the pack socially but always tells me that this zero peer pressure to party and I think that is quite refreshing. Most boys are smart and athletic and have a great sense of school spirit.

I married and divorced one.
He and his friends had less than stellar outcomes. One ended up being a musician, knocked up an English girl and then he and his family spent a very hefty amount of money trying to obtain parental rights as non-Brits. Another one ended up being a yoga-meister on the west coast. My ex sells used goods online and is waiting for payday when his folks pass. Another guy became a carpenter. They all smoked a lot of pot while in school.
You'd probably find a similar mix out of Walt Whitman, but without the hefty price tag and the azaleas.

It may shock you to know that things have changed a little since 1970

Our Upper School student is humble and kind. He has enjoyed his experience, is challenged academically, joined clubs that align with his interests, and has a great friend group.

I could've written this exactly about our Landon upper school student.

I have children at another private, but have been pleasantly surprised at how sweet the boys from Landon are! I totally expected a 'rough sports boy' vibe from them, but they seemed almost naive.

Maybe visit the school a few times and find parents whose children go there...for a full picture. Every school has it's not so pleasant boys or girls...but normally most kids are just trying to maneuver the teen world.

It's traditionally a school for Maryland "Lax Bros" and rich kids. It's known for being a traditional, all-boys school that's more "fun" and less demanding than St. Albans.

With that said, it's not 1993 anymore. It's a strong school, and Landon boys tend to really enjoy their time there if it's the right fit. The Landon boys I meet generally really loved their high school experience, whereas at the more "demanding" schools like STA or Sidwell, the students are more stressed and conflicted about their experience.

It's a very sporty school. Every boys' school is sporty, but Landon really embraces it and actively searches for athletics-oriented boys in the admissions process. If your son is not into that culture, it may not be the best fit.

You do realize that decades-old experience is not directly relevant here? And if you think it is, my step-brother attended in the 80s, went on to Dartmouth, started and sold two companies, and now is running his third and is an internationally recognized expert in his field, and credits Landon for giving him his initial love of learning and drive to excel. I’m sure there are others like your ex and others like my brother, all equally irrelevant to today’s student body.

Good US experience so far. Son was sporty when he started in MS and isn’t so much anymore. We don’t live close to many other students, so minimal friend contact during Covid. He has developed a greater love of science while there and the music program was a lifeline for him. A nice surprise for us. Thankfully, we didn’t know much about old reputation when he applied and have appreciated focus on character building over the years. Solid school

A mix of swanky and regular parents just like every place in DC area. Jerky people and or social climbers always reveal themselves in this town.
