VRBO bait and switch - WWYD?

Anonymous
Booked (or requested booking) a VRBO for 4th July 2024 in a popular area. Host got back to me and said - whoops, I don't know how that rate got on there, but that's the wrong rate - would you like to pay double? I, in fact, would not like to pay double. My card was already charged.

I don't know what the actual VRBO policy is on this, but I feel relatively certain that if you accept the booking and charge my card I have a pretty good case to make you honor the booking. On a practical level, though, would you want to take the chance that this person is going to make the stay miserable or screw you any number of ways? If there were a bunch of comparable, available places nearby I'd cancel and move on, but this was the nicest looking one. Not to mention the irritation/fraud factor.

WWYD?

Is it really double? And did you pay full amount or just deposit?
We are vrbo owners. We would have let you have it at the rate posted. BUT it’s really early to be booking ( not your fault) and they may have legitimately not changed their pricing for next year yet. We just did ours a couple weeks ago for next year because someone sent a message about booking again next summer because they loved it thus summer.
I think our rate went up 5% which is our choice. Double seems like a lot unless they’ve done a bunch of upgrades or something since posting the charges

YATAH if you don’t cancel your booking.

Maybe write to them and say you really liked their place but can't afford to play double. See if they negotiate. If they don't, I would cancel and write to VRBO to complain (the blame lies between VRBO and the owner).

You want to book this one because you know it’s below market. I think it’s very early to be booking Fourth of July. Seems like an honest error on their part.

They can cancel it.

No fraud, you got the winter rate in the summer, but I assume you knew that?

Yeah, it's double. When I looked at the property it had a $75 per night discount as it's a new to VRBO property, so I definitely thought it was a good deal and was taking a bit of a chance on that. It's still not cheap.

My card was charged the full amount, which IMO is on the host. I did a little research and it looks like you can set yourself up to approve bookings or not and this host didn't build that in.

We will likely cancel as the last thing I want to do after a long drive is wonder if I'm going to have a place to sleep, but man, not cool.

It’s not too early. I booked our vacation for next July at a boutique resort. If I didn’t book early, the place would sell out.

Don’t cancel it. Make them cancel it if they don’t want to give you that rwte

No, I didn't know that. It was nowhere in the booking.

Weird thread.

I would lodge a formal complaint with VRBO, and state that I want my payment refunded.

Yes, exactly. This is a popular area and things will fill up. Also not an area with many hotels. I was trying to get ahead of that.

That’s not the issue. OP’s payment will be refunded.

Do not cancel. This is their mistake and they should honor the rate. Respond that it’s unfortunate that they made a mistake with the rate, but your reservation and credit card was charged at X daily rate.

Let them create the cancelation and record the reason for doing so.
