Does anyone know how to tell which classes from MCPS middle school can or will be counted towards high school GPA? My kids are 7th and 8th graders in advanced math and I just learned their grades for advanced math will count towards their high school GPA. How do we know what other classes, if any, count towards the high school GPA?

Alg1 or higher math, FL, Engineer Tech class, and some very specific ones at some of magnet programs (which the kids probably know).

| I thought they only get the credit, but gpa is reset in 9th grade |
| Also world language. It counts on GPA if it helps the unweighted GPA. Otherwise it remains on transcript but with notation that it was not factored into gpa. |
Things shifted a few years ago, but now the MS grade only counts if it raises the overall GPA. Otherwise, they get the credit toward graduation requirements, but not the GPA ding. So my junior has the As from 7th grade Algebra 1 and French 1 counted in their current 3.97 (unweighted) GPA, but not the Bs and Cs from French 2 and Geometry in their disastrous virtual 8th grade year. But they received the credits for all 4 classes. Weighting is a different matter, though. I know that Algebra in MS isn’t considered an Honors class, but Geometry in MS is Honors. I'm not sure about MS languages overall, but my kid’s French 1AB and 2AB weren’t weighted. |
And the PP above is correct—the grades remain visible on the transcript, even if they’re not included in the GPA calculations. |
On the middle school report card, there is a column "Elig. for Credit." High school credit classes have a Y in this column. |
| Honors FL counts, regular FL does not. |
Honors FL means level 3 and higher. There are no honors vs non honors options per level. |
Wut? There's French 5 which is not Honors. |
PP was talking about middle school classes. |
The level 5 classes aren't considered Honors, but they are Advanced Level, which are weighted the same as Honors in the WGPA. |
My DS is in Spanish 2a/b this year and it counts as hs credit. |
Although Algebra 1 and FL 1 & 2 might improve UW GPA, for an A student who takes mostly honors and AP classes in HS these will actually bring down their weighted GPA. |
The thread is about GPA, not credit. Non-Honors (1 and 2) don't contribute to (Weighted)GPA unless your GPA is so low that it doesn't matter. |
