Recommendation for gut issues diagnosis FM doctor / nutritionist

Anonymous
Hi everyone,

I have low ferritin level 50, low b12 - 300, Vitamin D: 30 and crazy hair loss. My diet is good, eat non veg like chicken, shrimp, fish, eggs ... do 2 meals a day. Don't think Im absorbing my supplements. Any recommendations for a nutritionist / dietician / naturopath / fm who can help diagnose why I am not absorbing the nutrients I am clearly having in VA / MD /DC area?

Put your diet into the cronometer app so you can accurately track the vitamins and micronutrients in your diet. I thought I was eating a balanced diet full of veg but I ended up not getting an adequate amount of D and K.

You need to see a regular md. Have you had thyroid checked? Have you seen a GI Dr?

Strongly agree that you need to start with a regular physician.

Also, those ferritin and vitamin B12 levels are generally within the normal range (low end, but within the range of normal). It's not fully understood how vitamin D levels translate to health status.

did you get screened for celiac or other things that can affect absorption?

I take it you are intending "FM" to stand for Functional Medicine and not Family Medicine?

If I were you I'd consider a functional medicine doctor. They are normal MDs that focus on prevention and with complaints they try to get at the root of why you are sick rather than just throwing meds at symptoms.

I recommend this practice: https://wellbeingdocs.com/

Let me know who you find OP. I’ve had issues for years (my ferritin hovers around 15; cups of anemia, deficient in zinc, selenium etc and hair loss and rosacea). I basically have signs of malnutrition although I’m not underweight. I’ve seen several gi over the past 20 years for chronic “dyspepsia” , sibo, ibd but colonoscopy clear or mild inflammation . I’ve tried tons of diets (low fodmap has been the best) and I take whatever supplements don’t make me
Vomit but after spending $$$ on tests, expensive antibiotics, various doctors, protocols etc I’m just trying to get sleep and eat ok.

I second checking for celiac.

A third for getting tested for celiac.

After three GI docs blew me off I saw capital integrative health. They diagnosed me with celiac and sibo. I wasn’t absorbing vitamins either. Good luck.

These don’t seem that low

If you think you may not be absorbing your supplements/nutrients then you have a larger issue that needs to be addressed - you need to start with your PC who can then guide you to the appropriate specialist. Malabsorption can be for numerous different reasons so get to the root of the issue first https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/malabsorption#:~:text=Malabsorption%20is%20difficulty%20in%20the,can%20lead%20to%20specific%20illnesses.

Do you have anxiety? You do not have an absorption problem. These labs are fine, perhaps borderline barely, but acceptable without needing medical intervention

NP. I saw a doctor (a regular family physician) who said I was on the low end of normal but that she finds that many people have symptoms of deficiencies there. I’ve been on supplements since.

(I also have a strong family history of malabsorption issues, which might have been part of her deal)
