Can a rising senior get into a magnet program

Moving from out of town for next school year. Is it possible to get into any of the programs for a high performing student or do they only take kids in younger grades

But if you already started IB and are moving in-bounds for IB you can get in. I think they might let you even if you are not in-bounds so you can complete the degree.

RMIB too? I don't think so. For home school IB program, yes, I don't see why not.

Yes RMIB. RMIB lets kids in their regular program join IB in 11th if they are qualified.

Every RMIB graduating class has a number of kids who did not get in through the regular application process.

I do know an out of bounds RMIB kid who transferred for senior year into the IB program. I don't know for a fact but heard they came from overseas.

At Blair, I think any student can take magnet electives as long as they meet the prerequisites and there is room in the class, they do not have to be in the program. You should probably verify this with the school, because my kids graduated a few years ago, but that was the policy at that time.

If you did the 1st year (11th) of the diploma program somewhere else you can do the 2nd year at any school with IB, including RM.

Generally by 12th grade all of the students in magnet programs (SMCS, Global, Humanities) are taking electives that are open to all students in the school, provided they meet prerequisites.

So, no, you don’t “join the magnet program”, but any special courses are typically available to anyone with prerequisites.

OP - if what you are wondering is where to move to, move where it best fits your commute and the lifestyle you want after your kids leaves for college.

All high schools offer rigorous courses, including most AP courses. And there is also dual enrollment with Montgomery College. Your high performing student will have plenty of academic options. You may also want to consider extracurriculars as a deciding factor. Any particular sport? What clubs/interests? If you share specifics, people can offer mores suggestions.

This is correct but to clarify this is the policy if your child is already at a school that hosts a particular magnet. The only school I've heard that gives permission for out of bounds kids to transfer in RM for 12th for IB if as PP said you've already done the diploma program for 11th.

Kids drop out along the way so I would think by grade 12 there are slots.
