| Is it possible my average public school student would be accepted to Good Counsel |
|
Of course it’s possible.
The question you might ask is how probable it is. And for someone to venture a guess, you would have to know a lot more. Good Counsel is not thought of as a highly selective private school. They admit lots of “average” students. But not all applicants are equal. Children of alumni, graduates of Catholic K-8’s, Catholics, athletes who can play at the WCAC level and Diversity candidates have higher odds of being admitted. If your kid doesn’t check any of these boxes, his chances are lower. They aren’t zero. They are just lower. |
| Good Counsel is for average kids. You have a great shot. |
I know quite a few above average students from DC's class that were waitlisted last year. |
|
If your child is applying - support them in helping frame out a strong essay.
Remind them to have positive behavior in the classroom in order to have strong teacher recommendations. These are the 2 things that will help differentiate them in the application process. |
| Average students graduate and attend average colleges and end up being more successful than above average students who attended the best schools. So tired of people on this list serve and their judgements about school quality. |
| Very possible if you can pay. |
| Unless a sports or diversity candidate, probably not anymore. It has become one of the toughest admissions un the area. Try SJC too. |
| OP just go thru the process. You won't lose anything by trying. Attend the open house, take HPST (and a prep course). I bet your kid will get accepted. |
| PPs are lying. Good Counsel is not that competitive. |
| It's been hugly competitive for the last 3 years. |
| It has became popular in this couple of years because the MCPS students are applying more than ever. “We never thought of sending my DC to private schools.” crowd. And it’s a sports powerhouse according to my neighbor. |
This is true. And psst, the MCPS kids are smarter than the local K-8 Catholic kids especially better at math. So the MCPS kids score higher on the HSPT and voila, the kids who used to get in with mid scores and grades can no longer get in anymore. |
| Good Counsel doesn’t seem like that great of a school. They do, however, market themselves well. Our neighbor has children there. Her kids are a handful, but they are big donors and money talks. |
We saw tons of fellow mcps families at the open house today—including families whose older kids are in public high schools. |
