| How are schools around old town Herndon? I live in DC but am here for a meeting today, and it's cute! We've been considering a move to Montgomery County, but I kind of like it here. |
| Certain school pyramids in Herndon are great (Fox Mill, Rachel Carson, SLHS) but not sure if those neighborhoods are as close to old town Herndon as you'd like--and I do agree that the area is very cute. |
Old Town Herndon is mostly Herndon ES/Herndon MS/Herndon HS, not areas that feed into South Lakes or Oakton. |

I have kids in Herndon schools, though not Herndon ES. Herndon has a high percentage of recent Hispanic immigrants and high FARMS rates at those schools.
Middle school is a bit rough, but it’s only two years and the High School is a much better experience. My child who didn’t take honors classes in MS has an extremely diverse group of friends, but my child in honors classes is mainly around white middle class kids. It’s a bit of a two schools in one situation. Many of our neighbors have sent kids to UVA, Virginia Tech, Michigan, Pitt etc. after graduating from Herndon High. Herndon is a great place to live, we have great restaurants, weekly concerts in the summer, close to metro and toll road, and close enough to DC. |

Herndon downtown is one of the poor areas in Fairfax, many schools there are title 1 and high percentage of full or reduced lunch students. |
Zip code 20171 (Herndon/Oak Hill) are not in town of Herndon, it's misleading to call Fox Mill as Herndon. Franklin Farm south of Fox Mill is also in 20171 but their kids goes to Oakton High, a highly ranked high school. I think OP is thinking Herndon downtown as walkable "cute" community since he/she is from DC. I am not sure if she's thinking about joining the 'burbs. |
| Fox Mill and Franklin Farm about a 5-10 minute drive to Downtown Herndon. Both communities are walkable and pretty pleasant to live in. Neither are in Downtown Herndon though. |
Yes and you don’t want that. |
NP and I know that OP is talking about old town Herndon; however someone saying the houses in 20171 are not Herndon is not being misleading. The address is literally Herndon, VA. |
There are at least five smaller neighborhoods in between those two GIANT neighborhoods - why wouldn't you mention those, too? |
The downtown Herndon is nice but elementary and middle schools are not good. HHS is OK. Many UMC families there send their kids to private (St Joseph is in the middle of town and not expensive). If you like downtown Herndon, check out downtown Vienna. |
Because other posters mentioned Fox Mill and Franklin Farms and the responses made it seem like they were out in the sticks and not 5-10 minutes from Old Town Herndon. Because I don’t know the name of the other neighborhoods in between those ones. |
Sorry, but we are zoned for all three of those and it’s great. We can walk to restaurants, library, banks, grocery store, concerts on the town green, parks, W&OD trail, golf course, etc., and bike to Reston Town Center and Metro. My kids love being able to move around here. I miss being in and closer to DC but this was a good compromise. I would not be happy in a place like 20170 or Reston outside RTC and Reston Association because the endless subdivisions make me claustrophobic. |
Do you live here? My kids go to Herndon schools and they are fine. |
HI, OP. Have you looked in Falls Church City? It’s closer in, has a cute town, and great schools. |
