I received an email today from our MS AART that my 7 grader has been recommended for Young Scholars.
My child has been in AAP since 3rd grade and continues now in MS taking AA and HN classes. I don't understand however what this would mean for my child *in practice*? I see that our school offers some additional things for YS like field trips and clubs, but is the YS program limited to that? Also does participation in YS affect chances of acceptance into TJ (either positively or negatively)? Any experiences with YS program welcome. |

Young Scholars is: Designed to identify and nurture students with high academic potential who may face additional barriers to access and success in Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) and courses. This may include students who are the first in their family to attend college in the U.S., English language learners, students who are economically disadvantaged, and students who are twice exceptional. Looks like it's mentoring and counseling since they suspect parents can't take care of the need of the child's advanced academy needs? |
So is it good or bad? Does a YS recommendation imply that my kid is not catching up?
|
It helps if they want to apply to TJ otherwise, it's support for kids who they fear won't know how to navigate middle school and high school in order to graduate on track for college |
So this is a bit contradictory as I understand it. The second part which has some "negative" flavor, implies that a YS kid needs more support compared to a regular AAP kid, but how would this help in a TJ application? |
It means that your kid is definitely not TJ caliber. |
Because it's back door affirmative action |
AAP is focused on advanced Math, Reading & Science, which is no longer tested in TJ admissions. TJ admission is essay based, not merit based. Unlike in AAP, in YS focus maybe on writing essays, which would help with TJ admission. |
This is inaccurate. Do you even realize that? Or care? |
Can YS kids request to be moved to AAP? What is the process and criteria? |
From my understanding, YP is a subset of AAP, i.e. you can't be YP without being AAP. |
Sorry meant YS |
Lol, no https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary/advanced-academic-programs/young-scholars |
Why LOL? The link says:
So doesn't this imply that a YS should be AAP in the first place? |
it appears YS is a companion program for a subset of AAP students to make sure they continue with AAP and not drop out? |
