Seeing a (still small, but increasing) number of homes hit the market now with artificial turf in the backyard. It seems out of place in a $1M+ home, but maybe I'm missing something? Is this a new trend?

Friends did this in their backyard, natural grass in the front. I LOVE it. They got a kind that looks very natural, but with 3 small kids it's perfect. I dream of turf and eliminating all of the maintenance, weeds, etc.
Family members live in a 10m house and have artificial grass on the front lawn. Due to various factors it was difficult to keep real grass looking good. The artificial grass looks great and many other neighbors have it as well. They paid around 20k to have it put in so it’s not really an inexpensive option.
Haven’t heard of it being popular around here but it’s definitely popular in high end 3mil + neighborhoods in Dallas and Houston like highland park. |
Growing up, I had a neighbor who had concrete for his front yard and painted it green.
Gotta watch out for ACL injuries! #sportsjokes
we have tall trees in our backyard on one side that prevent grass from growing - we have seriously contemplated turf because the shade and foot/dog traffic turn the yard into a muddly mess when its wet.
Popular in California too but I've always wondered about little seeds and things that fall from trees nearby. Is it easy just to use a leaf blower?
It utterly destroys habitat for birds and insects and starves the soil beneath it. I am always stunned when I see people put in in their yards.
One of the best decisions we ever made. Our backyard gets a lot of shade and takes forever to dry after rain and snow. It was so muddy the kids never wanted to go out and I didn't want the dog out there. Turf has been a game changer. Esp with the dog! No more brown spots in the grass.
Oh HELL no! I can't imagine paying to install a chemical-laden carpet in my backyard. I would never consider buying a home with this!! Super tacky, bad for the environment, etc.
Gross. A plastic yard. |
Carcinogenic. I worked in the industry for 12 years.
I don’t get it at all. I get it for schools and sports centers because it’s very hard to manage grass here. But for a home I don’t understand at all.

I find it fascinating that there is no middle ground on this forum between artificial turf or 100% native species.
