Okay who do you think will be the next Speaker and how long will they last? I say Steve Scalise and he last 1 months. |
Are there any moderate Republicans that stand a chance? |
Between Donald J. Trump & Oprah Winfrey. (Although Taylor Swift may be in the running.)
The Speaker of the House does not need to be a member of Congress. |
So far names I've heard:
Steve Scalise (but people are worried about his health) Gym Jordan (HAHAHAHAHA yea really) Heard that presentations for prospective candidates will be made on Tuesday, voting is to be on Wednesday. |
Newt Gingrich. |
As discussed thoroughly in the other thread, the current House rules prevent anyone who has been indicted from being Speaker. Winfrey and Swift are still eligible, though. |
Is it crazy that Patrick McHenry might just end up temp speaker for the rest of this session? |
Really afraid of Jordan. Hoping for Tom Cole. Scalise would be a status quo, basically. |
No, not crazy. |
Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina, would be my choice. |
Scalise.
But when he doesn't bring the Senate bill to the floor, and the government shuts down and the GOP received the full barrel and rightful blame, some actual moderate GOP will declare Independent and vote for Jeffries who will end the shut down and allow the House to move forward to the 2024 elections. Or, the government just stays shut down until the new Congress in 2025, but that would be an unmitigated disaster for the country and somehow Biden would be blamed. |
Hakeem Jeffries. |
Tom Cole reminds me of Huckleberry Hound |
The Speaker pro Tem can only open and close sessions. They cannot bring legislation to the floor. So the GOP would have to vote him in to the full Speaker role. |
He isn't Acting Speaker the way other roles can be filled by Acting people. He doesn't have any power to put bills on the floor, etc. The only power he has is to recess the House and to hold the Speaker election. It would be crazy and terrible if he is the temp speaker for any length of time. |
