Puppy is skinny

We have a 10 month old mix dog and she is just so skinny! How long did it take for your dog to fill out and be full sized?

She is a mix of large breeds (Rottweiler, Great Pyrenees, boxer and Pit Bull). She eats 6 cups of Purina pro puppy a day.

She currently weights 67 pounds but just looks so thin - very long and tall but very thin. We walk around 3 miles a day and she plays outside as well.

It seems like she’s eating enough! Puppies go through a phase where they are tall and lanky, but then start filling out.

I would ask the vet. You may have to feed her more or she could be perfect. Ive seen a picture of dogs showing underwight, perfect and overweight. Your vet should help you more than us. Your dog is very large so it makes sense it will eat more than others

She could just be built that way. Some dogs are lanky.

Our dog filled out around 2-3. For a long time it looked like we barely fed her even though she was eating a ton. She's still got a lean build though.

OP - yea we just saw the vet for another issue and I brought it up. She said that most likely she would grow until 18 months instead of the normal 12 months like smaller dogs and she wasn't concerned. I just have never had a skinny dog before so its so weird to see her sometimes! Don't want her to be overweight obviously but want to make sure she is growing correctly! 6 cups a day seems like a lot!

This is a lot of kibble for a 67lb puppy. Our large breed is 80lbs at 8 months and still eating 4.5 cups a day. What does your vet say?

Also, the weights they cite online are averages for breeds, there are dogs that skew well below. You should have the vet evaluate.

Sorry, I am PP and missed this. Glad the vet isn't concerned. And yes, if you look at the growth charts for our large breed, he won't peak until around 2-2.5 yrs old.

Sounds like a healthy, athletic dog! Enjoy.

Large dogs do tend to fill out in the 18 months-3 years phase. My experience is by around 15-18 months they've stopped getting longer and taller, but then they bulk out until they reach their adult proportions. many calories she sho

Sorry, I pushed submit too early. I was trying to type: check in with your vet about how many calories she should be eating especially after she passes the year mark. In my experience, that period when they've finished the lanky phase is an easy time to let a dog get overweight, but of course you don't want to underfeed her. I'd expect her caloric needs to shift over the coming year so she will start to put on more substance with less input. Your vet can help evaluate and calculate calories.

If the puppy has a good amount of muscle and has good energy, I would not worry much about not having much body fat. Probably just a healthy puppy with a fast metabolism.

No? She seems ok - she eats breakfast lunch and dinner (2 cups each time). Not too many snacks unless we are training. Op here

Has the dog been checked for worms?
