The gifted and talented (GT) identification screening process

Does that happen in Grade 2 or Grade 3? Do parents need to apply? Any benefits for this labels?

It’s universal screening in grade 2. As our ES principal said “we should already know and be grouping your child appropriately”. It’s required by the state. Doesn’t give any special access to programs because there is so much transiency that by middle school too many kids that would qualify weren’t in MCPS in grade 2 for screening. They do universal screening for MS magnet programs.

Maryland requires screening in second grade but does not require any specific action based on the results. The standard does not seem too high as there are schools where more than half of the kids test as gifted and I think it was reported a bunch of years back that at one ES, every single 2nd grader scored in the gifted range.

In third grade you can apply for enriched learning (?) which is a completely separate process. It used to be very competitive but has been greatly expanded in recent years. The middle school and high school programs are also separate so getting an ES spot does not mean you will get a MS spot (there are far fewer).

WPES is so special!

Basically it is a useful data point, but not used by mcps

They screen in grade 2 and if a kid meets the criteria, they don’t rescreen them. If the kid does not meet the criteria, they are rescreened in grade 3, and if they don’t meet the criteria then, they rescreen in grade 5 (I think. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong).

What do they screen in Grade 2? Based on MAP score, based on teacher observation? Math, reading, and writing?

I think there may be some additional state test that is not transparent at all.

I have a 2nd grader this year. I have not heard about this CogAT test before. What is that, and when?

It is a very short screening version, not the full 3-hour version you may read about online.

Thank for for the link & clarification that it is a short version. The link points out that there have been reading dibels test in fall/winter/spring, but I have never seen any report/results posted on parentvue for the past 2 years (k and 1st grade). Did I miss something?

Not always true. When went through elementary school there was a year when they just didn't do it. When pressed the principal said "Sorry. Nobody ever seemed to care."
