Sports for short boys

What do you recommend? My preschooler is a fast runner, good with throwing and kicking. Very athletic. He inherited my genes so I would expect him to be no more than 5’6”-7” What sports would not put him at too much of a disadvantage?

Cross country definitely. Top distance runners are frequently quite small.

I am looking into this for my 5th percentile son as well and I’ve been told golf may be good. I’m also wondering about tennis?

He can play any sport until well into high school. I know some really short kids who are great at basketball and love playing.

At preschool age, you really have no idea how tall he will be. How do you know he “got your genes?”

Height is weird and not always what you would expect. My dad is around 5’10, mom 5’5, I am 5’6 and my brother is 6’3! Where did that height come from? Not really sure, but some of the grandparents are tall. It really is not as simple as parental height.

Anyway, I would let him play any sport he enjoys! If that is basketball, fine. Most kids will not play at the collegiate or professional level, so let him do what he enjoys.

Gymnastics although tbh I’d encourage track/running and swimming even though genetics are against him because those are great sports for long term health.

This. I knew short kids who made the varsity basketball team, one of which went on to play D3 in college.

What matters more is when he will enter puberty. Ask his dad went through puberty. There are kids that end up 5'7" BUT if they go through puberty at ages 11-12 and are 5'6" as a 12 year old or at least 5'7" by freshman year of high school then no problem any sport.

The issue is when you have short son AND they go through puberty late. It is really hard to watch. My oldest son is incredibly athletic but short AND went through puberty late. He entered high school 5'2". Beside cross-country and swim he couldn't keep up because when you weigh 100 pound and are that short you can't really play other high school sports. Coaches are also REALLY biased against short boys. The taller kid will get tapped way before any short boy.

I have a 4.5 year old boy and I don’t understand how you can claim he is VERY athletic. I also have 2 older girls (10 and 8). The 8 year old is very athletic compared to boys and girls her age, but I could not have said that until she was 6+ (or x Roy for th fact that she was sitting before 5 months and walking at 10).
How do you compare 4 year old that for the most part don’t really play sports?
My 4.5 year old learned to swim and bike on a few days (does that mean he is VERY athletic?). He also went from needing training wheels to biking standing up within a week (does that mean he is super athletic?).
