Is this year expected to be as competitive as last year?

DC did not get into school of choice (HS), wants to try again but I'm hesitant to go through this ringer again. 10th will be even harder and if passed over once, will probably be passed over again.

But trying to be supportive all the same.

Even if it's less competitive this year, you're applying for a different grade. There will be fewer applicants but also fewer slots. I don't think DCUM can tell you your odds.

What about boarding school?

No harm in trying. One of DD's friends didn't get into a top private boarding school last year (acceptance rate is in the low teens, IIRC), but did this year, as a 10th grader.

Always harder for tenth than ninth.

But for ninth, probably easier this year if GDS has gotten its head out of its backside this year.

I’d call the admissions director and see if you can get an honest answer. Maybe they don’t show their cards, but maybe they tell you the real situation (no spots, a couple spots and you’re a great fit, a couple spots but lots applying, etc). I’d try and see if you can get a feel

Doubt it, MCPS continues to acceleratingly derail.

How can that be? The private school critics at DCUM claim that public is by far the better choice, and anyone who thinks otherwise is throwing money away.

Every year it's worse, OP

It’s so hard to know as it seems that some schools take a larger freshman class fully expecting several to drop out for various reasons, but mostly due to rigor.

I’ve heard the opposite. Applications are down because of the economy and separately, many of the public school parents are returning in time for their kids to enroll in the strong ‘W’ schools. I know my bro and sis in law are doing this.

I am also interested in thoughts on this. DS seems happy in public HS but is just cruising. He is not challenged and is in a "top ranked" Public. Idle hands!!! He does some sports outside of HS

Try it if your DS is up for it. Maybe they'll see he's determined and give him a chance?

It's only been a month of school. Unless there is something objectively really awful about where he ended up, I would encourage him to bloom where he's planted and focus on making the best of where he is. The grass is not always greener.

How could you possibly know this? It’s only the beginning of October.
