I'm soon going to be in a situation where I may need to drive from Silver Spring/Takoma Park to Shirlington, VA on a semi-regular basis in evening rush hour traffic. I'll need every minute/short cut, etc - which map system do you find is best at showing the best route given current conditions and making real time adjustments as traffic conditions change?
Waze
Waze. Apple maps sucks.
Waze has gotten me into more ridiculous situations (mostly impossible left turns, sometime turns that are barred during the hours I'm traveling) and doesn't seem to shave off much time vs google
If it is a new route, I will usually check all three before setting out. Or if there is an accident and I need to use a different route. Each one will have slightly different ways to route you. But while I'm driving, I use Waze.
I’ll sometimes check Waze for traffic info, but prefer Google Maps for the actual navigation. I hate Apple Maps.
Waze is prone to occasional stupid things, as the PP said. For long drives I cross check with Google Maps and keep the sound off on one. For daily commute I use Waze alone but recheck the route mid-way through - it doesn't self-correct often, but I will almost always get a better route for the second half of my Dupont-to-Bethesda commute if I hit the prompt for alternative routes part of the way home.

Waze is good for cops. But it sometimes puts me in situations where I have to make a left turn at a busy intersection without a traffic signal and I don’t like that.
Apple has gotten better—I like that it shows where stop signs/traffic lights are—Waze doesn’t. Google is good because it shows you what lane to be in. |
I had to switch to Apple Maps after Google Maps started seriously draining my battery (even while my phone was plugged in and charging). It's better than it was, but it's still not great. Every time it says, "Proceed to the route," instead of actually giving me directions, I want to punch something. And I like how Google Maps shows possible alternate routes when using CarPlay—Apple Maps just shows you the route it's picked. Also, in my experience Google is a lot better about knowing traffic conditions and predicting travel times. So the best I can say about Apple Maps for driving directions is that it's not unusable. That's actually a huge improvement over what it used to be.

I use waze for navigation, but keep google maps on my phone as a backup for the rare circumstance when waze glitches.
One thing I strongly prefer about google maps is the visualization of real time traffic. If I want a snapshot view of what traffic looks like, I use google maps. But for giving me a route, I prefer waze. It's not perfect, and I agree with PPs about not liking the borderline dangerous turns it will propose - I don't follow it for those, I use other routes I know or just ignore waze and let it re-route me. |
PP at 10:34. I forgot to mention that one thing I do like about Apple Maps over Google is that Apple's routes tend to be less annoying and obnoxious. I haven't gotten as many left turns onto busy roads or routes that take me through residential areas just to save a minute. As someone who has often wanted a "don't ask me to drive like a glassbowl" mode in navigation apps, I appreciate that.
Waze and Google Maps are same company
Google. We deleted Apple Maps from our iPhones.
