Hey DCUM,
Does anyone know how I can block YouTube on my kids Chromebook? He’s on it ALL the time…..and it’s causing problems with grades and teachers. |
At school or at home? Youtube itself is blocked at school. Kids find other sites that sideload it so it bypasses the filter. At home, mcps doesn't block much of anything. |
|
My son had to get a permission slip signed to be able to access it on his chromebook. Did you? Ask the school to block it if you didn't.
|
| OP how old is your kid? |
None of your business |
This. It's really difficult to block it completely. The kids quickly learn the work-arounds and can get on YouTube anyway. Sorry, OP. It's definitely a source of frustration for many parents. |
Op here- he’s in HS. |
| At home, if he is connected on your home network and your router has this ability, you should be to. I don't think this is the right move. |
| Block it through your router. |
What do you suggest instead? This is an issue many of us struggle with (I'm not the OP). |
Is the problem at home or during class? HS is hard because teachers do a lot on Chromebooks and they don't want to create paper-based alternatives. Many teachers are too busy during class to police online activity. But some kids don't have the maturity to stay on track. It's an impossible system. |
How do you do this - in easy steps for the tech challenged? I'd like to block websites on my chrome book to stop wasting time. |
| Kids know a million sites for accessing YouTube videos that aren't YouTube. He probably has a shared Google slide deck with his friends with all sorts of links. |
I would talk to them - but it's easier said than done. At the same time, Youtube has so much useful information. You can learn anything. |
| Can you speak to your child’s school counselor? They might know or mcps it? |
