Storing a huge bag of rice

Anonymous
I’m going to start buying the really big bags of rice like you see at the Asian supermarkets. What’s the best way to store them? Thank you!

Ugh don’t. Unless you don’t care if pantry moths are flying all around.

I use a 5gallon bucket from HD

we use big cooler box. seals tight, no bug can get in.

I pour them into large plastic sealable jars. Don’t store in bag.

I use a Vittles Vault. It's meant for pet food, but is food grade, and keeps everything air tight.

Great ideas! Many thanks! OP

I just store them in the bag. I don’t have pantry moths but I always have traps out just in case. I’ve never had a problem, but we also go through our rice quickly.

I have one of those plastic jugs with a screw top (like the ones that have cheese balls or pretzels). I cleaned, washed and dry. I put the rice in that on the floor with an old measuring cup. I also have a smaller glass jar on the shelf that holds about 3-4 lbs and I keep that full for regular use. When it is running low, I refill from the big container.

We're a mixed Asian family, and always have a few huge bags on hand, because we have Basmati, jasmine, Vietnamese sticky and Japanese sushi rice all going at once. We have a low cupboard dedicated to rice bags of that size, and we usually keep the rice in the original bags and close them with large plastic clips. No bugs in the many years we've done this.

We do the same thing and also have no issue with flies. We have a smaller OXO pop container that we transfer rice to and pull out for cooking so we don't have to go in the bag every time.

Asian family here - same. I always freeze flour for >48h, but have never had any issues with rice. I transfer the rice to 4 or 8 qt restaurant grade storage containers and the rest stays in the bag with a plastic clip until we need to refill.

I also just store it in the bag, folded with a clip in a cool closet, and have never had a problem.

+1. Clip it tight with binder clips. We put smaller amounts in plastic canisters (like for flour, sugar, etc)
