Northern Virginia exodus pulls down Virginia’s income

Anonymous
The state’s median household income has fallen. One reason is because high-income workers in Northern Virginia are moving out of state. Virginia is growing poorer and its most affluent region is to blame.

Interesting article with data showing a lot of people with money are moving out of the area. There is a huge shift in population in NOVA happening right now.

"Let me say that again, louder and more specifically, for the people in the back: Fairfax County is now losing population. That hasn’t happened since the 1820s. That’s how profound a demographic shift this is."

"For now, let’s just deal with out-migration and not larger demographic trends: The average income of those moving out of Fairfax County is $106,356. In Arlington, $112,206. In Loudoun County, $115,254. Virginia is losing its highest-income residents."

Those don't seem like the highest income people in Fairfax or Arlington. That seems like incomes where you move to the exurbs to buy a house. I'm curious to see how the end of full time WFH changes this. The mountains around Front Royal are beautiful and you get a lot for your money, but doing that commute once you're called back three times a week seems like misery

What "end of full time WFH" do you speak of?

We are planning to move out because the school board is ruining the once-excellent schools here, and there’s no sign that downward trend will change anytime soon.

Ironically, we originally moved here in 2009 because of the great schools.

They haven't changed that much since 2009.

We wanted to move from Southern MD to Northern VA, but it's just too much money for crappy housing stock. So we left the DC Metro area all together. Life is much better.

We are moving our high HHI family and small business out of VA if Rs take control of the GA and ban abortion, etc.

Yes, you’ve said this before, so you should follow through and move to Maryland where you’d be more comfortable. Why wait?

Just remember, everyone is fleeing Fairfax because housing is so expensive because of demand. It makes total logical sense when you think about it as long as you don't think too hard

Isn't the problem that many moving in make minimum wage?

It’s a PITA to relocate. Prefer to maintain my rights here.
