General counsel office at a university

Hi! Anyone have such a position? Not the actual GC but one of the other attorneys / assistant GC. What is work life balance like? How hard is the learning curve if you’re coming from a setting other than an educational institution? Thanks!

Work life balance is good.

Work tends to be 100% in person.

Learning curve not too bad. Check out NACUA.

A lot of the work is screaming into the void though. You won’t have a lot of influence or ability to make an impact which can make it not super rewarding. You have to strike a balance of caring enough to do your job and at the same time feeling no investment in the outcome because you won’t be able to influence it.

What is the salary range fir these jobs?

There are great jobs but generally pretty hard to get. +1 for the Nacua recommendation as a resource if you do get it.

$$$ is not great for general counsel jobs relatively speaking especially at public institutions.

Regular associates at big public universities make around $120-180k. No bonuses. Good benefits though (similar to feds).

Public school? In Va then you’re actually an employee of the AG’s office.

My BFF is 35 and a GC at a liberal arts college in the Northeast (v rural area). She loves it. Amazing growth opportunities, but very much in person. She is married but does not have and does not want kids FWIW. Way better with life balance than big law (she was in litigation previously).
