It’s been a while since we’ve taken a true family vacation that didn’t involve the beach or visiting relatives. That said, I’d really like to plan something for next summer. What are some non-beach vacations that your tweens have really enjoyed? Ideally, I’m thinking someplace domestic (or maybe Canada).
Any ideas or suggestions? |
| Muskoka in Ontario is in cottage country. It has beautiful lakes and walks and is a favorite with Hollywood types. |
| Cruise |

Disney
New York City Arizona (ATV in the desert, hiking, resort with a pool) |
| We did a road trip to Niagara Falls. Stopped at the Grand Canyon of PA on the way up ( can’t remember exact name but if you google that it’ll come up) then the Utica Zoo on our way to Lake George then home. |
| My kids love the western NC mountains. We hike, go tubing/kayaking and white water rafting on rivers. Also rent a pontoon boat to explore and go tubing on the lake. We rent houses that have ping pong or pool tables, as well as fire pits. We can be as active as we want, but it's also relaxing and quiet. Kids prefer it over the beach. |
| Chicago or Boston. Lots of good ideas on this board for both cities. |
|
National Parks.
Alaska, Colorado, the Dakotas. Or cities - NY, Boston, San Francisco, Vegas (I'm serious!), Toronto, Seattle. What kind of things are they into? We like to do more than one location on a trip so we're combining city and mountain or whatever. Keeps the kid with the short attention span interested. |
| National parks out west! Some favorites have been Rocky Mountain National Park combined with a ski area, Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons + Jackson Hole, Yosemite and San Fran, and Zion/Bryce/Arches. Maine is great as well. |
| We did a road trip to Montreal and Quebec City when the kids were 11 and 13. Same as you, before that we had mostly done beach vacations and they had started outgrowing them. Loved it! |
| We took 3 weeks and did a road trip out west to the national parks. Trip of a lifetime. |
| I took mine to Seattle. Had a great experience! |
| We had an awesome vacation with tweens in Vancouver. Museums, sporting events, bike riding, boats (ferries, water taxis), parks, sea plane tour. |
| I think Jackson Hope/Grand Tetons would be fun with tweens |

Chicago
Montreal/QC Jackson Hole New Orleans Palm Springs CA I'm not really all that into E Coast but going W you can do a lot. National park/resort combo is for us, the best. We stopped pure beach vacations prob at 9 with kids. Unless we go to the Islands and mix it up. CR, PR, St Lucia are good for that. BVI and the keys to sail. |
