I’ve been down a rabbit hole on IG watching videos on refurbishing furniture recently.
How hard is this really? Assuming you have quality wood furniture and some garbage MDF based stuff, and the proper sanding and painting tools, and are generally a handy person. Scale of 1-10. Like just time consuming or actually difficult difficult? Some of the end results are awesome and I really love the sustainability aspect. Some much furniture today is garbage, even at relatively higher end stores. |
| ^and NOT some garbage MDF stuff… |
Refinishing wood furniture is tedious but not very difficult. Reupholstering is difficult. |
| I tried. Started with an antique wooden chair. It was so tedious I didn't even come close to finishing it. But I tried to sand by hand; if you use tools for this, YMMV. |
| I think its so time consuming and they polish the end results on social media |
| I've made furniture. Finishing it is about half the work of making a piece. Refinishing has the additional work of removing the old finish. It's a lot of work. |
| It is not easy and the more fine details, edges, crevices, etc., the more difficult it is. |
| The only thing that is easy is the whole chalk paint + wax farmhouse look. You literally don't even have to sand to pull that off. I was thinking about doing it for an old white dresser that has yellowed. |
| I think the issue is how much are you willing to invest in the right tools. It doesn’t usually pay to do one-offs yourself because of the tools needed. |
| Like a 3. Not hard at all, just needs elbow grease. |
|
To do, not hard
Really well, very challenging. Challenges: Tools Space/ventilation Appropriate stain color and even application Choice and application of high quality poly |
| If you can find a stripper place, that's where I'd start. Worth paying to have the old finish gone, take it home and work on it there. |
| Wow, I have decided to refurbish a few pieces myself and was coming here to ask about it. Seems to tedious for me, does anyone know of any companies that will work with you to do this? |
| I started a bench, but still haven’t finished because it’s boring and must be done in the garage. |
| Easy to start, hard to finish. |
