Apparently, DCPS has implemented this.
https://www.dcurbanmom.com/legacy/posts/list/1150100.page Why can't MCPS do this? A lot of other school districts have used this with good results. Just google how many school districts are using this. Some students are probably distracted by cell phone. MCPS is trying to come up with ways to increase student performance. Using yondr pouches would be one way to help kids focus in class. Better use of funds than an anti-racist audit. |

That's because every single time we try to enforce cell phone policies, parents complain that their kids need their phones on them at all times "in case of an emergency." Parents are the ones texting them in the middle of class. Sadly, a lot of problems really do all circle back to parents.
|
op here, yea I guess, but since MCPS has shown that they don't always care about what parents think (ie, lawsuit over lgbtq materials in class), why can't MCPS disregard the parents' opinions. Other school districts have done it with good results. No child has died or were harmed because of using yondr pouches. IMO, it would really help with distractions in school. |
| Blocking phones is not the primary issue. You are focusing on the wrong things. |
The OP seems to be mainly focused on waging their culture war, which I agree is the wrong thing. |
| I think it's funny when people make snide side comments about the stupidity of MCPS having an antiracism audit when there are literally three threads on the first page of this forum about racist incidents at MCPS schools. |
| Because not everything needs to be taught like living in a jail. |
|
Most teachers are surprisingly lax about it but occasionally there will be the one teacher who will send kids to the principal's office for 10 seconds of phone use.
They should just allow them before and after class and at the discretion of individual teachers during class during downtime if there is any. |
If we're auditing for free then why does MCPS need to spend so much money on it? And at least one of the incidents was anti-Semitic which isn't part of the action plan. |
How did we survive for decades without using cell phones *in class*? I was never allowed to use my therapy GameBoy in class. |
| I don't want to wast time and money on stupid pouches. Confiscate phones that are used during class. |
PP do you have data on this? I bet the parents you describe are a vocal minority. |
I'd complain. They don't have the right to confiscate personal property. |
I agree. When you treat students like inmates, they'll act like inmates. |
Sure we do. It’s not confiscation if it is returned to parents or students at the end of the day. |
