I cannot believe I am so stupid...in my defense, I am home sick and on Benadryl and was in the bathroom when the phone rang.
Anyway, I received a from a 202 DC cell number and the person started to talk on the phone, something about sorry I haven't gotten in touch my father just past away, please call... I assumed the call was for one of my former nannies (we've had 3 and one had a lot of issues--unpaid taxes, relatives calling, etc). So I picked up the phone and said "you have the wrong number", the person asked who he was talking to and stupid me gives my real first name. Then they ask me to confirm it and I say, "yes, <name>". Then the person says my phone number and asks me to confirm it. Then I get suspicious and say "you have the wrong number, I already told you". Then I hang up. While I did not give out any information that is not available in the phone book, this person does have a recording of me saying my name. I imagine this could be spliced and put into some type of recording that I just agreed to buy $10,000 worth of something... Does anyone know anything about this type of scam and what I should do now? I have the time of call and phone number. I also have the first part of the message, before I picked up the phone. And after listening to the message I now know the person said he just got back from Nigeria (that would have tipped me off right there). Any advice? It's now 2 am and this is REALLY bothering me

I'd call your police non-emergency line. If this is a phone scam that has been happening a lot, they might know about it. It doesn't sound like you gave out any really damaging info.
It sort of sounds like this could be a bill collector - but the part about the Nigeria trip doesn't fit. Strange. |
| I am a super suspicious person, but I don't think this was a scam. It sounds to me like a reasonable conversation between a possibly tired person who's father just died and is back form Nigeria, and you (on Benadryl). The caller was surprised that he got you instead of the person he was expecting, which seems natural, and (possibly influenced by cultural differences), insisted on getting your name to make sure he was really calling the wrong number. You both might not have been as clear as usual under the circumstances. I wouldn't worry at all. |
