In MCPS, students are supposed to have both social studies and science, but often these subjects are lost to increased time for Math and ELA. It is not uncommon for any instruction called science or social studies to actually be an ELA lesson using a reading about science or social studies topics. As a result, ES students are unlikely to learn any methodology in those content areas and they retain very little content knowledge, including vocabulary.
Your ES child should learn, at minimum, what is covered in the grade band standards established by the NCSS (https://www.socialstudies.org/standards/national-curriculum-standards-social-studies-introduction) and the NGSS (https://www.nextgenscience.org/content/home-page). You can purchase materials that are marketed to address these standards.

At home library material will vary depending on the age of your kid, their interest, and how much you’re willing to spend. But here’s 10 book recommendations

-The Magic School-bus book series
-Horrible Histories/Horrible Science series
-Who is or was/What was/ book series
-If you were a kid… book series
-History Smashers book series
-The Story Of… book series
-You wouldn’t want… book series
- The … Love science series by Kim Derting
- The Questioneers series by Andrea Beaty
- Usbourne encyclopedia of World History
- Lonely plants kids books

Not true. There are stand alone courses starting in HS (except for USH 8 which is MS), but the subjects are introduced no later than sixth grade and are supposed to be introduced in elementary.

These are best introduced at home. You cannot rely on the school system to do any of these justice.

Check out the pinned post at the top of the MCPS forum. Lots of good resources there.

MCPS middle school students take science and social studies daily (unless on a block system).
