Age to make sandwich?

Anonymous
My DH thinks DD7 is too young to make a PBJ on her own. I say she's more than old enough. Maybe it won't be a good PBJ or the jelly won't spread, but she can do the PB at least.

What age did your kid make their own sandwich?

18 months? I was making my own toast by then.

I should have added - with an adult nearby. We open glass jars for her, for example.

I remember standing at the counter prepping food and my 2 yr old stepping onto a step-stool and sticking his head under my arm and popping up at the counter that way and putting his hands over mine to "help" me.

Putting bread in the toaster and pushing the button isn't the same as spreading PB on bread and getting jelly from the fridge.

I would say around 5-6.
I still make my 11yo lunch though most of the time. I’m making myself lunch anyway.
She has done it if I’m not home or if she’s hungry before I am.

Cheese and meat on bread - toddler. Spreading PB and jelly, maybe preschool? It's gloppy and uneven, but it's not DH's sandwich so not his problem.

7 is too young to make a sandwich?? Goodness does he chew the food and spit it into her mouth too?

My kids have been making their own PB&Js since they were 2. Yes, they didn't turn out very well at first and still don't look how I would make them. But they get better every time.

Sure, I make them sometimes. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they drop a spoon or knife and have to clean up. Sometimes there is a gross amount of jelly on the sandwich. It's a process.

4 or 5. It got less messy around 6.

I think it's too uptight/controlling to be thinking about whether jelly with spread. Mine is perfectly happy with clumps of jam, regardless of who made the sandwich! And tbh I am pretty uptight/controlling, I admit.

That's what the paper towel underneath the bread is for - to catch the mess.
