Hello All,
would like to know about other options that are available to take Algebra 1 in middle school if the kid is non AAP. |
If your kid is in gen ed advanced math, then they will take the IAAT and 7th grade math SOL in 6th grade, just like the AAP kids. The criteria to qualify for Algebra 1 in middle school is the exact same for AAP kids and gen ed advanced math kids. |
My kid is in level III ,not in Advance math.so I'm looking for options to take Algebra 1 in middle school. |
He can still take Algebra I in 8th grade. As far as I know, there is no path to Algebra I in 7th grade other than going through the normal process. |
If your kid is not in advanced math, there is no way to take Algebra I in 7th. Anyone who wants to do so is allowed to take Algebra I in 8th. Your kid can either jump up in 7th grade to M7H, or they can do regular M7 in 7th, and then Algebra in 8th. |
Does Advance math mean level IV AAP ?. How do I know my kid is in advance math . |
My friends daughter did not take advanced math and took Algebra 1 in MS. Parents can request the class and should be able to get their kid into it. The danger is that the child is not prepared and does not do well in the class. I was surprised that this happened, I thought you had to have a certain score on the IAAT and pass advanced on the SOL but that is not the case. Most parents follow the schools recommendations though. |
May I know if there is any criteria or any other test that needs to be taken to get into Algebra 1.All I hear is only kids whom are un advance math can go for it . May I know the exact process for it ?. |
Same poster, she took it in 7th grade. OP: You started two topics on this so this seems to be something very important to you. Talk to your AART and your child’s teacher. Find out what is happening there. There is no real rush to take Algebra, most kids will take it in 8th grade and some even in 9th grade. Your child will be on a solid math track regardless of when they take Algebra in MS. |
The process is that kids in LIV and Advanced Math skip 5th grade math and take 6th grade math in 5th grade and 7th grade math in 6th grade. They take the SOLs associated with 6th grade and 7th grade. Those kids also take the IAAT in 6th grade. Kids who score in th 91rst percentile on the IAAT and pass advanced on the 7th grade SOL are offered the opportunity to take Algebra Honors in 7th grade. That is the normal process. Essentially, 6th grade is spent doing pre-algebra. The two tests demonstrate a mastery of pre-algebra skills needed to succeed in Algebra Honors in 7th grade. Kids who do not meet the test scores and kids in gen ed math have the option of takeing Math 7 Honors or Math 7. The Math 7 Honors kids will take Algebra Honors in 8th grade. |
Thank you . Is Advance math is same as level IV AAP . |
They take 3+4 math in 3 rd, then 5 in 4th, 6 in 5th and 7 in 6th. Then they need 91st percentile in Iowa and pass advanced on the SOL. |
Not every school starts in third but every school has Advanced Math in 5th. |
