Facebook becoming Obitbook Late 40s

Anonymous
So I had a cancer scare this summer, and have to be vigilant for the rest of my life, so I feel more mortal at 49.

Then the last 3 days, when I open Facebook, I am greeted by the news of another college or high school classmate who passed away at 49 or so.

I’ve heard old people like to read obituary section first, I guess to check if anyone they know?

Is it all downhill from here, I’ll hear of death more and more, as well as face my own health scares in parallel?

Welcome to midlife!

You're moral, yeah

And it’s been obit book for our parents since they joined in 2014.

I mean, yes. As you get older, the frequency of death and illness increases. This is completely logical.

But it can still be sad and a difficult thing to wrestle with. Why do you think there's a cliche about people having a mid-life crisis? It's when they start to really own their own mortality.

Mortal! Maybe moral too.

Old age (which you have not entered yet) is very challenging.

Younger people complain that old people just talk about their health problems .

Do you think that is their preference?? It can take over your life. Wait until you are in your 70’s like me.

I give great credit to old people who move forward and don’t get depressed.

A third of us won't live to 70

At any 50 year HS reunion, about 15% of the class is deceased. So in my class of 340, about 50 people. Sounds like a lot of people, but that's the reality.

Ok, but OP is only 30 years out from HS. Not 50.

I'm mid 40s and am not seeing anything like this.

Not many died in their 40s but in early 60s definitely seeing an uptick in cancer and deaths. Life is shorter than you think. Just because your parents lived into their 80s and 90s doesn’t mean you will. Don’t put off retirement.

There has been an acceleration of all cause mortality since the first quarter of 2021 and each quarter afterwards, with the fastest acceleration in death rates between the ages of 24 and 54 though all age ranges have seen increases. More cancers, blood clot related issues, heart attacks etc.

I have seen it amongst my friends and former classmates and their spouses from high school and college. Who knows what is the cause, it would be nice if our public health officials started studying it.

Facebook is also serving you up more of this because of your internet searches and posts.
