I have a job where I've been for nearly 20 years. I know it by heart, but I'm bored beyond belief and the place is toxic, leadership is lacking and I don't see it getting better anytime soon. I've been interviewing and may soon be getting an offer (fingers crossed!) but then I think what a terrible idea it would be to leave, to walk away from all I've earned, especially with about 10 years left before I can retire. I've looked around internally too, but nothing has come up that fits my skills or seems all that interesting, and I don't think my office would let me go either.
If you've faced this kind of a decision, how did you handle? |
| Absolutely change jobs. Life’s too short to be unhappy for 10 more years. I switched jobs last October and have no regrets: more money, better environment and less work. |
| 10 years is a long time so yeah I’d make a move. Are you giving up any benefits for your 20 year tenure? |
| Definitely. |
| Well, I'd have to see how much money I'd be leaving on the table. I'd be giving up something, that's for sure. the pension is awesome. |
| change job as long as you are not walking away from govt benefits |
| Yes. Ten years is a long time. Go for it OP! (Wouldn't walk away from a federal job as PP noted tho. In that case, ten years isn't really that long.) |
|
When are you planning on retiring? I switched jobs 3x times since I turned 54.
|
| I switched jobs at age 54, and I’m hoping to retire by age 60. |
I get it. I’m also about ten years from retirement a plan on changing roles in a few years and then again a few years after that. Life’s too short to spend doing something that isn’t fulfilling. |
Govt benefits are only worth it if you have been there a long time since other places pay more. |
He actually has to get that pay and not be laid off in his 50s. Both may not be easy. Pension alone is worth $30k a year, doubling your salary outside of law or medicine is unlikely (won’t happen in tech, too old) |
| I didn't but it's because I have enough money not to work. I simply went part time and take several vacations in a year to tolerate my work before I retire at 50. |
| I’m planning on it. I envisioned myself ten years in the future with or without a job change. Best case and worst case. Made the decision easy. I need more light at the end of the tunnel than a moderate pension and a crappy federal salary until then. |
| Are you a gov lawyer in your 40s? |
